Wieliczka Salt Mine - Salt Has Never Been More Beautiful

Apart from large resources of coal, which has been extracted for centuries, Poland is famous also for the salt mines! This deposit of rock salt in Wieliczka has been mined since the 13th century.

Spread over nine levels, the mine has 300 km of tunnels, but the Tourist Route comprises only 3 km. Going down into the depth of 135 meters, you visit magnificent chambers, galleries with works of art, altars, statues sculpted in the salt and underground saline lakes which make this tour a fascinating pilgrimage into the past of a major industrial undertaking. There are 20 chambers to visit - of which the Chapel of St. Kinga is the most impressive one, because of its size, crystal chandeliers hanging over visitors’ heads and biblical scenes presented on the walls. No wonder that in 1978 Wieliczka Salt Mine was included in UNESCO World Heritage List. A great alternative for hot, cold or rainy days (but not limited to!) for it's steady temperature of 14 Celsius degrees and soothing, therapeutic climate.
